Mt. Biking: Two Rivers - Deben to Orwell Wind Direction: Wind Stength: Surf / Sea State: Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: Sunny and hot :) Max Speed: Distance Covered: 12 miles (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise)
Saturday 24th August – bike ***** Two Rivers – Deben to the Orwell –
sunny and hot.
With amazing hot and sunny weather forecast for the Bank Holiday weekend
with records set to be broken Mag and I thought it best to say at home to
the avoid nightmare roads and busy places but we still wanted to enjoy the
weather and get away from the crowds so we were up early with a flask made.
Then bikes out we were down on the quiet prom at Felixstowe by 7 o clock
this morning:) With the sun well up and the sea like a mill pool we enjoyed
a slow ride along the prom with me stopping at regular intervals to take
pics! Reaching the end of the prom at The Fludgers you have to turn inland
before returning to the prom at The Dip but the sight in front of you is
amazing with Bawdsey shrouded in a misty haze:) With just the odd dog
walker or jogger out we soon reached the River Deben entrance where we stop
for our cuppa and sit in the sun with the sun glistening on the super calm
water while watching the yachts head out. We are joined by a wheatear on
the rocks behind us as Mag makes friends with a Merle coloured dog of
several breeds with a very friendly owner:) Then it’s onto another of our
favourites Felixstowe Ferry where we have another long chat to a couple who
walked here from town, we have never been so sociable!!! We had a quick
spin around the boat yard then back across the golf course before turning
into Ferry Road. We then leave the road and bike through the woods at The
Grove where I stupidly fall off my bike! Then through Felixstowe town
centre where Mag goes to Tesco and home while I continue the journey. I go
through Langer Park which looks surprisingly litter/damage free and onto
the popular viewing area by the Docks. I sit at the end watching the
action, people in the café enjoying fish and chips, men fishing and
families paddling and throwing stones:) A couple of German cyclists asks if
I am waiting for the Harwich foot ferry, I say no but tell them where it
lands. As there are now several people waiting for the little yellow ferry,
I wait for it to arrive while being entertained by loads of Starlings
pinching scrapes from the café! I then continue past Landguard Fort and go
out on the small wooden jetty to watch a small container ship enter the
port as the tug boat attaches a line! It is then onto the beach where the
Orwell enters the sea before heading for home past several birdwatchers. At
the Manor car park which we also use for windsurfing I bump into Roger and
Maureen Vickers, a long standing windsurfing friend who has recently spent
some time in Papworth Hospital but hopefully is now on the road to
recovery:) I spent a pleasant hour having a cuppa and catch up before
completing the last section along a now very busy prom. Mag was pleased to
see me as we parted three hours before and was beginning to think the
worst! I had actually been away from home for nearly 6 hours and had only
covered 11 miles! Then Mag and I had a lovely peaceful afternoon in our
garden with lunch well it was my porridge from breakfast, followed by
afternoon scone/cake while sorting out my foil and reading. More good news
as Ipswich win 5 – 0 to go top of Div. 1, England trash Ireland by a
record margin and there is also a very slight glimmer of hope for England
in the test against Australia!!! So with no wind forecast for several days
it could be some more early starts to enjoy the best of quiet Suffolk:)
